Why are sharks important?

Sharks help keep the marine ecosystem balanced and healthy. As apex predators, they control the populations of other species, which prevents any one group from becoming too dominant and throwing the food web out of balance. This helps support the overall health of the ocean, including species important to local fisheries like cod and mackerel. Some sharks also feed on weak or sick animals, helping to keep fish populations strong. Protecting sharks means protecting the long-term health of Newfoundland’s coastal ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.

How we help sharks

Our mission is to protect sharks by contributing valuable data to scientific research and helping shift public perception, especially among local fishermen. As our ocean waters continue to warm, we’re seeing changes in the types of shark species appearing in Newfoundland, making it more important than ever to track their movements and behaviour. Through our catch, tag, and release tours, we collect key information like size, species, sex, and location, which is shared with researchers studying how climate change is affecting shark populations. We believe that by getting people involved firsthand and showing the value of these animals, we can help build a stronger future for sharks in our changing waters.
