Alec and Bryan Oram
Alec Oram was born on Braggs Island and spent his life fishing the waters off Newfoundland, where sharks were once feared and often killed. His son Bryan, founded The Shark Co. in 2011 to catch, tag, and release sharks as part of a growing conservation effort.
Together, they’ve created a unique tourism experience that brings people closer to these misunderstood animals. Through their tours, the Orams share their knowledge and passion for sharks while helping generate new opportunities for their small coastal community.
Alec Oram
Alec Oram once saw sharks as dangerous nuisances, a common belief among fishermen of his generation. But through Bryan’s work with The Shark Co., he’s come to see sharks not as threats, but as vital, misunderstood creatures worth protecting. Watching his son tag and release sharks, Alec’s views shifted—and he’s not alone. Many local fishermen are now embracing a more respectful approach, choosing to release sharks rather than kill them. Bryan’s passion has helped spark a quiet change in how the community sees these important predators.
Bryan Oram
Since founding The Shark Co. in 2011, Bryan Oram estimates he and his guests have caught and tagged around 500 sharks. He believes one of the best ways people can help conserve shark populations is by experiencing them firsthand through catch-and-release tours. For Bryan, every trip is a chance to shift perspectives and spark appreciation for sharks.
Kyle Oram
In the summer months, Kyle is a crew member and top “shark wrangler” aboard the Northern Pelagic. He plays a vital role in our operations, and as the nephew of Bryan, and Grandson of Alec, Kyle is a 3rd generation shark conservationist and angler alike. At the age of 5, Kyle successfully landed and released his very first 6 foot-female Blue Shark. The rest is history! Now as a young man, he has years of shark and ocean experience under his belt and has a clear voice for shark conservation.
